Life Happens Here..! Part 1: Living Room

Posted by Bhavana Deshpande

Last year with our lease coming up in our old apartment and we had to take a decision on either to continue in the same place or move to a new apartment. Since my dear hubby lived in that old apartment for 3 yrs already and also knowing me, the choice was obvious. We started our hunt to find a new place! The current place we live in is one of the best places I have rented so far. In general, the features that attract me to any house is

  • Spacious and open layout
  • Cathedral/High ceilings (contributing to the spacious feel)
  • Abundance of natural light and air
This unit had them all! We moved last winter and here I was again with the task of decorating this new place! EXCITING JOB! What made it more exciting was that we decided to throw most of the old furniture (read 'his' furniture!) and buy new pieces which we both like. This was like a challenge, staying within budget but not compromising on choice! Thus began our shopping spree..

The main attraction of this apartment was the beautiful sage colored accent wall with a big window. It made me go bonkers with all the different themes and ideas screaming in my head..!In the end I decided to go my mom-way. Earthy-tones it was! It was my 'Diwaan Corner'. As mentioned in my previous post, after having experimented with airbeds, twin mattresses, I finally found a sofa bed which I currently use as a diwaan. All my ethnic decor peices sprang out of the boxes. I had to pick and choose what went there. The first thing to do here was the curtain, to cover the window. We found these beautiful rust/deep orange curtains in JCPenny. We just did not want to cover such pretty window completely, therefore added beads in the center. The whole thing came together wonderfully in the end.

Colorful Throw-basket

I use this pink woven basket as my throw-holder. It adds to the color contrast in its small way.

One corner done! We sold A's old black leather couch. After looking around almost all the furniture stores around, a white italian leather sectional captured our attention. Though it was a little out of our budget, we managed a good bargain on this couch. I prefer a sleek-cut modern sectional to the traditional bulky sofa/loveseat combo in an apartment. Its my personal choice though! We became proud owners of a contemporary white leather couch which now adds a contemporary look to our living space. wink wink ;) Few hundred dollars later, the living room furnishing was finally complete. Phew! Felt a sense of accomplishment after seeing how it came put together so well!
